Individuals who study music demonstrate:

        -  higher abilities in nearly all academic areas, especially math
           and reading
        -  decrease in aggression and violent behavior
        -  lower likelihood of abusing drugs and alcohol  
        -  lower instances of developing Alzheimers or other
            degenerative mental diseases in old age

Furthermore, involvement in music can provide:
         -  a creative outlet and source of expression  
         -  stress relief
          - increased personal discipline 
          - a sense of accomplishment  

And most of all....playing music is just fun.  :)
